There’s a new Philippine product on the shelves of T&T, our local Asian market. Prominently displayed the last time we shopped there were bright, green boxes of Muscovado sugar. Muscovado is unrefined brown sugar with high molasses content making it more flavourful.
Because Muscovado sugar is minimally refined, it retains many of the essential dietary vitamins and minerals which are present in the sugarcane plant. While it may be odd to think of sugar as being good for you, Muscovado sugar happens to be high in potassium, calcium, magnesium, and iron, among other useful compounds, which is why some cooks like to use it. Although Muscovado sugar is certainly not a health food, it is more beneficial than pure white refined sugar.
Good to know it’s Fair Trade!
I have now started to use Muscovado in my beverages instead of refined sugar. It also inspired me to make Muscovado Sugar Cookies this afternoon! Found the recipe here – http://ilovemilkandcookies.blogspot.com/.
I added granola to a batch for variety.
These cookies are amazing! I love the texture and flavour.
Love how crisp they turned out!
